The Psyche was originally a 97-metre, 2,135-ton Royal Navy light cruiser launched in 1898. She performed patrol service during World War I and was formally commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1915. After being decommissioned and stripped, she was sold for use as a timber-carrying lighter barge. She eventually sank at her mooring during a violent storm. Located so far into the bay, the wreck can only be dived at slack tide. The site is littered with boat anchors that have become stuck and been cut free. Visibility was surprisingly good for the location on the day, but care had to be taken with buoyancy as the wreck is covered in fine silt. One misplaced fin kick and visibility drops to zero in an instant.
