Notes

First dive with the guys at Big Fin Divers Kota Belud. Only managed a few hours' sleep the night before. Combined with an early start from Kota Kinabalu to reach the resort in time for the first dive of the day, meant we arrived in less than ideal shape. But luckily the effort was totally worth it — the team at Big Fin was super friendly and great to dive with. Boat was very comfortable, same with our cabin. Food in the resort was tasty, and my only regret was only having two days to enjoy everything. Dive site is a collection of large rocks and associated reef ranging in depth from around 12–22m. The visibility on the first dive was amazing, with crystal clear water; we could see the shallow part of the reef while still on the boat. Current was fairly forceful in places but nothing too uncomfortable. Reef topography was probably the highlight of the dive for me, with a lot of overhangs providing shelter to large schools of fish and the occasional bamboo shark.
